Echo Volume 4: The Last Edge of Darkness

Last but certainly not least, time for the final review of the Echo series. Right off the bat, I have to say thank fucking god this book had a good ending! By a good ending, I don’t mean satisfying(cliffhangers can be satisfying so that’s different), I mean an ending where everyone(mostly) is happy and healthy. I’ve said this in other reviews but I will forever be a massive sucker for a happy ending, especially after the mc has been through hell and back. And this book definitely gave that to me. On another note, the descriptions of the fights and anything in the mindscape were excellently confusing. By that I mean I could practically imagine how trippy it would be in movie form.

The one thing that I was conflicted about was the amount of existentialism in this volume. One on hand it was a little too much for me while on the other hand, it was pretty entertaining thinking about something I’ve never thought about before. But what I think I settled on was that even if it was confusing at times it was a nice change from the usual books I read. Altogether this book was a great finale for this series and I give it a 9 out of 10.

Echo Volume 3: The Dialectic of Agony Review

At this point, I’ll settle for Atriya just being healthy. I’ll forget about the whole being happy and healthy as long as he can be healthy! Not only was I stressing about Atriya’s physical and mental health I was also on a(pretty fun) roller-coaster ride of intense fights followed by calming lulls the whole time. Normally I’m not a huge fan of when books switch perspectives(I’m usually trying to hurry up reading so I can get back to the person’s perspective I like better) but for some reason, I quite liked it switching between Atriya and Verus. I think that might be because I found it really funny when Atriya was super confused about the psychic things happening to him but as the reader, we of course know what’s going on since we get both perspectives. I’m pretty sure I caught myself whispering “I know something you don’t know”, which is always amusing.

Atriya is also quickly becoming one of my favorite characters. He’s got that whole badass with a heart of gold thing going for him and I of course can’t forget the newly white hair. I will fully admit that I am a huge sucker for white hair, especially when it wasn’t white before! You give a character who was already great with normal hair, white hair and they become amazing to me. That’s just one of my little superficial moments when I’m reading a book. But on my last and non-superficial note the epilogue for this book hit me so hard in the feels. All of a sudden I found myself crying and in turn that makes me very excited about how this series is going to end. So, I think this book definitely deserves a 9 out of 10.

Echo Volume 2: The Taste of Ashes Review

This was one of those books that were stressful to read(in a good way)! The whole time I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, the shoe of course being the betrayal that I was expecting from Atriya’s colleagues. I was in a constant state of worry and it was great. I hated putting it down because there was so much fighting that I was sure almost every other page Atriya was going to be mortally wounded and left for dead. But of course, he had to keep showing us how badass he was by constantly saving everyone’s asses.

Besides the constant badassery, there was one other thing that I really enjoyed in this book. That being Atriya finally hitting the “fuck it” button. I loved how he eventually got to the point where he didn’t care what everyone thought or how things are usually done and just wanted to be a true warrior/hero. He’s going to save lives and damn the consequences. This also makes me excited for the next book to see how much more he changes. So, of course, I have to give this book an 8 out of 10.

Echo Volume 1 Approaching Shatter Review

Now I primarily read fantasy so it’s rare for a Sci-Fi book to capture my attention. But when I saw Echo’s book cover and description I was intrigued. At first, I thought it was going to be very similar to 1984 which I personally didn’t like(a combination of being forced to read it and thinking it was boring) so I was skeptical about enjoying it. But that skepticism quickly turned into intrigue as I kept reading. There were two things in this book that solidified its position in my good pile.

First was of course Atriya himself, but more specifically that it’s believable that he can change. In other books that have the mc change their entire world view like Echo, it’s sometimes unbelievable that they would change that much that quick. But Approaching Shatter sets up Atriyas’ character in a way that makes it plausible for him to alter his whole life and perspective. And thus it won’t give me whiplash when he inevitably switches to the Dissidents’ side(I don’t know if this is actually going to happen it’s just my prediction).

The second thing that I really enjoyed was the inclusion of what I like to call Sci-Fi magic(you know ESP, psychic powers, that type of stuff)! When the psychic stuff comes into a Sci-Fi book it automatically gives the book bonus points in my opinion. Mostly because I feel like it helps take the book out of reality a little bit more and gives it more of a fantastical feel. Which is what I love about fiction.

All in all, I was very fascinated by this book and am very interested to see where it goes so I’d give it a 7.5 out of 10.
