Firefighter Shows: Thoughts

While it’s not surprising if I have multiple cop shows to watch at once I was surprised that I have 2 firefighter shows. So, I wanted to share some thoughts I have on 9-1-1 and Fire Country.

You might think that having two firefighting shows is too much but these shows are both super similar and complete opposites. Basically, they are 2 sides of the same coin. Where 9-1-1 has more outrageous situations and is ultimately more happy, Fire Country is more normal situations but insane personal drama. In my mind they complement each other very well. I get to experience both my desire of getting to see everything work out for the characters in the end and getting to see them go through more and more shit.

When I’m craving something more serious Fire Country is there for me. And after I get really stressed about Bode’s future I just watch 9-1-1 to see Buck miraculously survive another extreme force of nature. Best of both worlds! I just love both of these shows and I can’t wait for the next seasons!

Muted Review

This is one of those shows that I not only had high expectations of, but my mind also started to make predictions of what would happen. Sadly for me, my predictions were wrong in this case but that was only the tip of the iceberg for why I didn’t like this show. I will admit my predictions allowed for more sympathy and empathy for the main character and made it more dramatic, so I felt it was kind of boring that it was exactly what the cops at the beginning thought it was. I just felt like why bother making the trailer look like they’re doing all of this to figure out the truth(implying that what the cops originally think isn’t the truth) when instead this was all for one psychologist’s obsession.

The obsession the psychologist had for the mc was just one example of very confusing moments in this show. Throughout the entire show, I just kept saying “Why and what the the fuck is going on?” to myself. So many moments had very little explanation which lead to a bunch of confusion and definitely ruined this show for me. And no moment had less explanation than why the fuck would any government okay spending all this time and money on watching one teenage murder under the guise of making sure he’s safe to be in public. Actually I was wrong the ending itself was way more confusing, like why?!?! That’s all I have to say about the ending.

But all in all this show was just plain strange and confusing and I would have to give it a 4 out of 10.

The Little Mermaid Review

Okay, I’m diving right into this review and I’m not going to bother to try and avoid spoilers since we all already know how this movie goes. This remake was really good, a perfectly fine addition to the list of live actions. The CGI and character designs were perfect, yes even Sebastian, Flounder, and Scuttle(WTF did people this a “live-action” fish and crab was going to look like!!!). My favorite part was how each of the merpeople had their own distinct pattern, I do have to admit I loved some of Ariel’s sister’s colors more than hers. Not only did the movie look great but Halle Bailey’s singing was on point. I can also appreciate that besides adding a few scenes/songs the overall story didn’t change, it’s basically the classic Little Mermaid story with some bonuses.

While as a whole I enjoyed this remake there are two things that I had issues with. The first and definitely the lesser issue was that besides Sebastian, Flounder, and Scuttle no other sea creatures talked. Not even Flotsam and Jetsam talk which I was pretty disappointed about. I kept expecting the other sea creatures to be shown talking, especially during the songs where there are other singers, but that didn’t happen. As much as I didn’t want to think it, I just kept thinking “If the main three can talk why aren’t the rest?”. Now, my second issue is the much bigger one: I can’t decide if I like the new songs they added. In the other live-action remakes like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin where they add new songs I really really liked those songs. But with the new ones for The Little Mermaid, I can’t decide if they were worth the added time. Though I think they might grow on me after some time so lets see if my opinion of them change.

Before I finish this review I do have to say that even though I liked it I didn’t leave the theater super hyped. And that’s probably due to the fact that The Little Mermaid as a whole has never really been one of my favorite Disney classics. So, it’s no surprise that I wouldn’t be super excited for its remake. But even still I would give this movie a solid 7 out of 10.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story Review

Now that there’s been plenty of time for people to finish Queen Charlotte I feel like I can talk about it now. First and foremost I really enjoyed this show. They excelled at so many things in this show, but the one that really stuck out most to me was how well they connected it to the main Bridgerton story. The flashforwards to the “present” were the perfect way to keep the show connected to the rest of the Bridgertonverse and make it clear that this mini-series is mainly to show more background on characters that get overlooked in the original show. But at the same time, the flashforwards were limited enough that you get completely engrossed in Charlotte and George’s story almost forgetting about the connections.

I also loved how all of the characters felt like accurate portrayals of their younger selves. By that I mean I never once thought “How did they change so much?” or “This doesn’t seem like the character I know”. Any differences from past to present are given good explanations. Everything about this show came together perfectly to make a great mini spin-off show so I would give it 8 out of 10.

Empire of the Vampire Review

Oh my gosh, I loved this book! I will admit that at first, I was worried that it was going to be just humans vs. vampires(with vamps being the bad guys of course)but man was I glad I was wrong. You can’t imagine how excited I was when the book revealed that Gabriel was half-vampire(I wouldn’t call that a spoiler since it was revealed at the beginning)! I don’t know why but I absolutely can’t get enough of the book trope of a half or even full monster(who is often filled with self-hate) fighting its own kind who are definitely the bad guys. And I hit the jackpot with this book!

I loved everything about this book. Everything from the illustrations(oh my god those were awesome) to the world-building but most of all I loved the vampire lore. It just felt like truly classic vampires and I loved that. It’s nice to have new takes on myths but sometimes it’s just nice to go back to the classics. I also can’t get enough of Gabriel being the shining example of the asshole mc whose heart of gold is buried beneath a bunch of emotional and physical trauma. And as anyone who reads fantasy knows that mc type makes the best protagonists

One thing that I was surprised I liked was the non-linear storytelling. Having the story told that way had me constantly worrying about what was going to happen in the past even though I basically knew the outcome. And weirdly enough telling the story in the format of the mc sharing his life story makes me even more intrigued about the rest of the series. Like is the rest of the trilogy going to be the same format or is everything going to eventually catch up with the present? So, in case you couldn’t guess I’m giving this book a 10 out of 10 and waiting till Fall 2024 for the next book will be torturous!

Book Club The Next Chapter Review

As you might guess, I saw this movie with my Mom and sister. I have nothing against this genre of movie it’s just not my favorite so I went in expecting an average movie that was relatively entertaining to watch. And that’s practically what I got. I don’t think there was anything wrong with the movie but I also don’t think there was anything special. It was a cute movie plain and simple.

I guess because I’m so used to movies that have higher stakes, more consequences(either in the movie or for sequels), and way more ups and downs this movie felt kind of flat. Even though there were a few “low” parts they just weren’t that impactful so the movie as a whole was just okay to me. Basically, I wasn’t able to get drawn into the movie so when anything “bad” or “good” happened I was just like “Okay this is happening now”. Even though I wasn’t a huge fan of the movie it’s not bad so I would give it a 6 out of 10.

The Dark Wizard: Adventures of Sebastian Morrow Review

Have you ever had one of those times where you try to predict where the plot is going but the actual plot is nothing like how you wanted it to go? Well reading this book was one of those times for me. I wanted this book to be a complex story with a morally grey/anti-hero/good bad guy type main character who realizes everything’s not black and white and that “dark” magic in itself isn’t evil. I wanted an intense emotional struggle ending in the realization of “fuck society I do what I want”. But instead, I got a boy worried about being rude/sarcastic to the man who essentially enslaved him.

Besides the fact that the book was nothing like how I thought it would be, it was also boring, unfortunately. The fight scenes were insanely quick and severely lacking in description. We barely saw Sebastian learn any magic even though multiple people said he was super powerful. Most of the magic we did see was just telekinesis. Literally, the most interesting parts of this book were the violence committed by the main villain and the possible dilemma of either choosing to die or sacrificing people to live that Sebastian would have faced when The Dark Wizard died. But that last one was a lie anyway so that was bullshit. I was just really disappointed with this book so I have to give it a 5 out of 10.

BattleBots Thoughts: Drama Time!

With my bracket already prepared there are no more predictions to be made so I decided to instead talk about last week’s big drama! That’s right the Riptide v. Shatter fight, and more specifically Riptide itself. I want to start off by saying that even though I love Shatter(in my top 5) and really wanted them to beat Riptide I wasn’t able to lie to myself and say they actually had a chance sadly. So, the outcome wasn’t unexpected but this fight definitely solidified my massive dislike(some might even say hate) of Riptide. I was already super pissed at them for the completely unnecessary destruction of Captain Shrederator, like seriously they were on their back with no hope of flipping over and Riptide still felt the need to keep destroying them. Real dick move, even if they were trying to impress the selection committee, there’s still something called class and sportsmanship. People were calling Jake Ewert the new villain of BattleBots a few seasons ago because of his Huge catcher thing and saying stuff about sportsmanship. What Riptide did was way worse! So, I already was mad at Riptide and then they go and call Team Shatter paranoid even though they literally caught them breaking a rule?!?! It doesn’t matter if it was something innocent like putting decorations on the bot for the walkout, Team Shatter had every right to demand a re-weigh. And they had even more of a reason to demand re-testing after the bot magically weighs less! Like hello!! Where did that missing weight go? Also don’t get me started on that “handshake” Ethan “offered”, no self-respecting person would shake the hand of someone who just said the shit he did about them if they had a choice so I know that he did that just to try and make Adam look like a dick for not shaking his hand.

I would have 100000% done exactly the same thing that Adam did(especially after learning there was more drama in the pits), not only making sure everything was 100% fair but I too wouldn’t shake his hand. All of this is to say I love Shatter and hope with all hope that Riptide does not win.

The Company You Keep Review

I was very intrigued when I saw ads for this show so I had high expectations. But sadly I would say the show was average. In all the promotions they made it seem like it was going to be extremely sexy but for fucks sake they were broken up for half the show. It had practically the same amount of sexy time as every other crime drama I watch so I kept thinking “false advertising” to myself. Another big issue I had was that for a good chunk of the show, Emma annoyed me so much with her naivety and black-and-white view of the world. I just wanted to shake her and be like “Girl do you not know the reputation of the CIA?!?!?”. She acted so superior just because he was a criminal and she was an agent even though her agency has done worse then him!

Though I will admit the last couple of episodes made it a lot better in my eyes and even got me to look forward to a second season a bit. I just wish Emma lost her rose-colored CIA glasses sooner than she did. But at least she did by the end which I think will make a second season way better if it gets renewed. So, I would ultimately give this show a 6 out of 10 with the hope it gets better.
