I only read the second book in this series because I hoped it would improve, but man, was I horribly wrong. The first book was not good but the second was terrible. This was the first time I remember truly hating a fantasy book and just wanting to get through it as fast as I could. So, let us dive right in on why these books suck.
First is that 99% of the characters are extremely shallow and very 2 dimensional. The only one who has a smidgin of depth is Soren but even then he has some shitty qualities that keep me from actually liking him. But back to the other characters. Everyone in this book only cares about money, sex, looks, and magic. I have literally never read a book that says the words fat and ugly more than these two books. At first, it was annoying than I quickly got disgusted about how shallow everyone was. Not to mention that almost every girl in this book had zero self-respect and self-control. So just because a guy is big and tall, the women can’t stop themselves from sneaking into his room to have sex with him even though he is an Andrew Tate wannabe who won’t shut up about his bullshit about Alpha, Beta, and Omega males? Phoenix was appalling and every other guy in this book was just a less shitty version of him(but still shitty).
Another thing that got me about the characters was that they would change their mind about someone or something at the drop of a dime mostly due to money. It was so irritating! They were soooooooooooo obsessed with money that they just forgive kidnapping and torture because they got money out of it. Even Soren would change his mind so quick because of money. But back to the kidnappings, for a government that wanted to have so much say in who their magic users married why in the world would they do absolutely nothing about the forced marriages? Now, time for Soren. At first, I really liked his “I don’t give a fuck” attitude but it quickly became too much when he did absolutely nothing to get the other guys to treat the women more than just objects.
On another bad note after finishing the book I realized there’s not much real plot besides the men having as many conquests as they can. Both of these books just give off the vibe of a self-appointed “alpha” male’s fantasy of women being treated like objects while at the same time being okay with being treated like objects.
I already said this once but I feel like I need to reiterate that this is the first time I truly hated a book and was disgusted by it. I mean come on I literally read a book about a serial killer hitman and he was actually likable and you rooted for him, unlike every character in this book. So, it’s no surprise I’m giving this book a 0 out of 10.
Oh and P.S. both of the books need editing for typos and such.
