I was able to see this movie earlier due to Regals Mystery Movie Monday so I of course have to review it. Since it hasn’t come out yet I’m going to try to keep this short and not give too many details. With that being said time to jump right in(FYI I’m going to call this movie just Kraken because it’s too annoying to type all of that out every time).
First and foremost Kraken is a really good kids’ movie. But before I continue I do feel like I need to make a distinction between a really good kids’ movie and a really good movie in general. The latter of course is a movie that all ages can love, and not because of “adult” jokes but because there aren’t unexplained details or very lazy explanations for certain details. For example, Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon are amazing movies in my opinion but a movie like The Bad Guys is a good kids movie but not that great of a movie in general. The former didn’t leave me questioning certain plot points unlike the latter which made me question why there was only like a few anthropomorphic animals.
Whether that’s good or bad Kraken falls into that good kids movie category for me. And it might seem petty but the main reason I put it in that category is how they explain away why Ruby and her family look different. I’m sorry but making a joke that they are Canadian doesn’t not work for me when they are obviously not human. When I first saw the trailer for this movie I thought it was going to be something like the world knew non-humans existed but they were hiding what type of creature specifically they were or they were going to have something that disguised them as humans. But no, no one really questioned why Ruby was blue or her hair was clearly tentacle like. And while I know that’s a silly thing to be annoyed at I just feel like they could have made up a better excuse.
Now, I do want to end this review on a good note and that is the animation. I absolutely loved the fact that every character was distinct. No two characters looked the same. With animated movies, you can get away with having side/background characters that aren’t that different but Kraken chose to put time into all the characters which I love. So with all of this in mind I would give this movie a 6 out of 10.
