You ever have one of those moments where a book has a majority of good reviews and you’re just like “What the fuck how do you guys like this?” and start questioning your own opinion? Well, this is one of those books for me and I am not going to let those good reviews influence me, because oh my god did I hate this book. I haven’t slogged my way through a book this much in a long time. I wanted to DNF sooooo bad but I kept hoping it would get better. It didn’t. I had so many issues with this book that I don’t even know where to start so I’m going to start with Nathan.
Nathan had almost no personality, about 0.1% of personal agency, and absolutely no knowledge of anything. Every other character knew Nathan knew nothing about just about everything but still acted annoyed when he messed stuff up. Until the very end, he barely made his own decisions or even bothered to try and learn about the mysteries surrounding him. Every single time some new information or secret message showed up and he showed absolutely no interest in figuring things out I wanted to rip my hair out. Then even at that end, it still seemed like others were influencing him. Nathan truly seems like an empty vessel for the plot and not a good thought out main character.
Now, the next thing that pissed me off was the description of the book itself. But tangent first… I’ve watched quite a few K-dramas that have descriptions that don’t come into play till a few episodes in. There tends to be a few almost prequel-like episodes showing the backstory of the mc’s parents. The description of Mordew feels exactly like that. All of this talk about the corpse of God but it doesn’t become a thing till the last chunk of the book. It all just felt like nothing but confusion happened for the first 2/3rds of the book and then everything was piled into that last bit of the book with only minuscule explanations.
Next thing that I really did not enjoy(which probably others really did) was the actual writing. This book is the shining example of someone who uses 10 words in a sentence when 5 would do and combine that with what I like to describe as flouncy(not quite fancy but close) writing. It was unnecessarily wordy for me.
Oh, and one other thing was… WHAT TYPE OF FUCKING ENDING WAS THAT?!?! It’s only a smidgin better now that I know there is another book(which I will 99.9999% not read) but still it was shit. After struggling through the whole book I was at least hoping for a good ending with clear explanations but nope… dead mc(oops spoiler sorry not sorry). I know it might seem stupid or naïve but I don’t read books to see the main characters die/fail permanently. I enjoy triumph after struggle, oh yeah, and an alive main character!!!! I’m also perfectly fine if the protag is actually the “villain” as long everything they did wasn’t a complete waste/undid at the end.
This whole book was a waste of my time and I’m giving it a 3 out of 10.
