Barbie Review

This movie is insane because it’s both exactly what I thought it would be and at the same time nothing like what I thought it be. I knew going in that it would be hugely feministic, but I definitely didn’t expect it to make me take a new look at my own experiences as a woman. That’s what shocked me the most about the Barbie movie, I never would have guessed that a movie about a toy that I never really played with as a child would have me looking at my own life like I am now. It makes me think about how I haven’t felt like I’ve personally experienced most of what Margot’s and America’s characters talked about but I’ve definitely dealt with some of it and can empathize with the rest. And like I said before that’s absolutely crazy that one movie can make me think about that.

Another amazing part of this movie is the message told through Ken. While some people would think it’s trying to be “anti-man”(which it’s not) I think it’s actually saying that a person needs to figure out who they are/not base their worth on others. Ken thought he was nothing without Barbie so he went to the extreme to feel some self-worth by getting “power” but all he needed was to figure out who he himself is on his own(not connected to Barbie). Which I think every can connect to…realizing who you are not based on other or your “job”.

To end this on a lighter note, I of course have to add that all of the casting, acting, jokes, and even the sets were perfect! Everything worked so well together that it made the discussion of a serious topic super fun. So, I’m giving this movie an 8 out of 10.
