I have two conflicting opinions about this movie. On the one hand, I thought it was a great movie, super cute, and I understand entirely why specific stuff was omitted. On the other, I am still disappointed at everything they omitted. While I logically know why they had to take things out, especially after hearing that it would have been over 3 hours long if they didn’t exclusively focus on just Alex and Henry, I’m still not happy about it. I just feel like the story lost a significant part of itself when they took out everything that could be considered “darker” or not just cutesy rom-com stuff. Honestly, I was primarily upset that they entirely nixed Alex’s panic attack when the emails were leaked. In the book, that scene had me bawling and I was so ready to witness it IRL, so when it didn’t happen I was really let down. I can deal with ignoring the divorce, Bea’s drug problem, everything about Richards, even the erasure of June but glossing over the issues that Alex deals with mentally and emotionally disappointed me. I wish they would have turned this into a 2 to 3-part mini-series instead so that they could have included all the nitty gritty parts.
Now, with all of that being said I still really enjoyed the movie. It was a perfect rom-com so I would have to give a 8.5 out of 10.
