After reading and liking Shane Purdy’s other book The Arcane Academy I decided to read Infected, and I was not disappointed. It was a fun read, especially since it was a pretty unique idea for a story. I always enjoy it when I come across a new book world that I’ve never experienced before. I also think this book improved on the excessive “it is what it is” issue that I discussed in my review of The Arcane Academy. It wasn’t perfect, but I definitely appreciated that when the MC had time, he actually asked questions and didn’t just move on immediately. I also have to say that the leveling-up and points system felt much more natural in a sci-fi setting. I’m still not the biggest fan of it, but it makes sense in the story so I was okay with it.
One thing that could be considered both a good and bad thing was that at its core Infected is essentially the same story as The Arcane Academy. Some could say that’s bad since it’s not that creative to write the same story and just change the details, but I actually kind of like it. I like it because now I know the perfect author to go to when I want this specific type of book again. So, all around, I’d give this book a 7 out of 10.
