To prepare for the movie, I decided to read the book for the first time. Which I know is risky considering most book adaptation history, but I have faith. Everything great in this book can be boiled down to the fact that Suzanne Collins made Snow’s character development believable. I feel like in villain prequels the easy way out is to make the MC perfect but only turn evil at the end(usually due to heartbreak). But this book was the exact opposite. While he wasn’t at the level we know from The Hunger Games, there were constant moments that showed readers that he’s always been that way and just needed that one big catalyst to push him over the edge.
Besides getting to see behind the curtain of Coriolanus’s mind, the next best part of this book was coming across the bits and pieces we recognize from the original trilogy. I got to keep experiencing the “I get that reference” meme over and over again, which was great. Honestly, I loved everything about this book and can’t wait to see the movie so I’m going to give it a 9 out of 10. I’m taking one away because I wanted to see more(especially about Tigris).
