My first thought after this movie was the “My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined” meme, so I think that sums up my thoughts on Napoleon pretty well. But I guess I should go into a little bit more detail. Basically, the only good part of this movie was the actual war/fighting parts, everything thing else was either super boring or very awkward. From trailers and what I was hearing on the internet, I thought it would be very dramatized and epic, so when that wasn’t the case, I was pretty sad.
Honestly, I could deal with the boring parts, but it was the awkward romantic parts that really got to me. I left that movie having no clue if Josephine was actually supposed to love Napoleon too. The stuff she was saying would lead me to believe she did, but besides some of the frisky parts, she never seemed to be happy around him. I was constantly flip-flopping between thinking she was in love vs. if it was just one of those 17th/18th century “a woman needs a husband or is ruined” moments. I mean, in the five minutes we saw her, the freaking 18-year-old looked happier marrying Napoleon than almost all of the screen time of Josephine with Napoleon combined. I don’t know if that was on purpose or if it was just poor acting, but it made it impossible for me to root for the relationship, particularly since I wasn’t even sure if I should be rooting for it at all. And considering their relationship was an extremely important part of this movie, then I feel like it should be made pretty clear if this was supposed to be a good or bad relationship.
So, my final score for this movie would be 3 out of 10. I honestly wish Ridley Scott had taken more artistic liberties with the facts to make it more entertaining to watch.
