After learning I was finally getting more Sherwood’s Doom, now known as The Blind Bowman, I was ecstatic. Then, I also learned that Shadow of the Wolf was getting a rewrite, and I was both excited and nervous. It was exactly like when you hear your favorite book is getting a film/series adaptation; you’re so happy but afraid that the things you love will be changed. Shadow of the Wolf is by far one of my favorite books, so I was so scared that it would be unrecognizable. But luckily, I had nothing to fear!
So, after reading both the original and then the new version, I wanted to share my thoughts on the changes and some thoughts on the future books. The most noticeable change was of course the change from winter-born to forest-born, and I am completely behind that one. Forest-born definitely makes more sense. I was also relieved that the few innocuous scenes/details that were removed didn’t change anything important. However, then I did wonder if it didn’t change anything why remove it, but hey, I guess since it’s not important it doesn’t need to be there in the first place.
While I say I love everything about this book, there is one detail I wish would have been removed. Like many readers, I’m not a huge fan of the pregnancy trope, but I understand that the vixen-goddesses pregnancy is essential to the plot, so I’ll live with it. I won’t necessarily like it, but I’ll survive. But I was hoping so much that the line “My lover. My son.” would have gotten removed. I just can’t stand the incestuous implications that line brings up. I so hope that it’s metaphorical or something!
Now, for the next book(Dark Fire), I really really hope that Robin’s family is not actually dead. And not because I want Robin to have a big happy family but because I want to see the big confrontation that would ensue when they reunited. I can just picture it and it would be so emotional. I also have to say that after reading the description for Wild Wood Rising I am once again nervous. If I have to go an entire book without Robin’s POV I will be very unhappy. So, I am really hoping that it’s one of those moments where the character isn’t missing to the readers but is just missing to the other characters.
Well, anyway I still absolutely love this book and it of course still gets a 10 out of 10 and I am eagerly waiting for the moment I can buy Dark Fire!
