I absolutely loved the first book so it comes as no surprise that I loved this one too! Even though I touched on this briefly in the previous book’s review it still feels weird to say that the best part of this book is the stress and worry that comes from having the story told by characters sharing their past. Sure you know the outcome, but how it gets there is the real question. The addition of Celene’s POV was both great and sucky. In the beginning, I hated her calling my boy Gabe a liar but by the end, I was amused because it gave off an almost sibling rivalry vibe.
While the worry about not knowing the past is crazy the fear for the future is even worse! I’m the type of reader who constantly comes up with theories on how the story will work out in the best outcome so this book is a real doozy. I keep coming up with ideas on how things will eventually turn out, at least okayish, for the main characters, and if I do say so some things that happen at the end of the book make my theories possible. But that hope I have is extremely rocky because I can’t ignore the “does not believe in happy endings” bit in the author’s bio. I really hope his definition of a happy ending is that everything is perfect and no one is sad because I can deal with a lot of despair as long as the main characters are alive.
Oh, I almost forgot, but another reason this book is remarkable is that it made me cry! I didn’t cry for 99% of the book, but those last few chapters got to me so much and that just made every second of this book that much better.
