Machosapiens: The Gilded Prison( Book 1) Review

I’m really disappointed to do this since I not only got this book in a Goodreads giveaway, but I was also really excited to read it after checking out the description, but I had the hardest time sloggin’ through this book. All of my issues with this book can be sorted into two areas.

The first area is that there are almost no explanations for things. The best way I can describe it is that the author took the tip of “show, don’t tell” to the extreme and didn’t bother to tell us anything. Or they edited out things that they thought were unimportant, but turned out to be extremely important. Basically, I have never read a book that had me question my reading ability this much before. I was constantly saying things like… What’s going on? How did we get here? What’s this place? Why are we here? Wait, he has a tail? Wait, she has wings? Does she have claws or talons (because there is definitely a difference, and I will fight you on that)?WTF is going on? I just need a bit of exposition to help me figure out what was happening, or at least what the characters looked like.

The second area is what I’m calling the “Déjà vu” effect. By this, I mean the fact that too many times I found myself saying, “Wait, didn’t this just happen?” I even went back a couple of pages once to check, and sure enough, it was the same sentence repeated almost word for word. There’s also the fact that the same things were getting repeated over and over again, so by the end of the book, I was tired of hearing it. There is also another fact that many times a scene would be presumably over, then the next paragraph, it almost feels like we went back in time because the actions didn’t match up. For example, one moment the FMC is standing over a dead body, then flies away with the building crumbling around her, only for the next paragraph to have her standing over the body again.

The thing that sucks the most is that the story and concept have so much potential, but the writing just made it impossible to really like it. Oh, and I almost forgot, but if I wasn’t stupid and read everything wrong, the author decided to throw in a bit of half-sibling incest at the very end, which ruins everything for me. Because of all this, I have to give this book a 4 out of 10.
