Where other people are obsessed with true crime/serial killer podcasts, I am obsessed with cult or cult-adjacent documentaries. Got a question about Scientology or FLDS? I’ve got you! I get weirdly excited when a new doc drops, and even more excited when it’s about a group I don’t know. So, I wanted to share a few thoughts I had about this series. First thing I’ve got to say is that this show did a very good job at planning the show out. The show felt like it was using the Duggars as an in to talk about the IBLP, which I think is a smart idea.
Another thought I had was how different the structure of IBLP is from all the other cults I know about. For a moment there at the beginning, I couldn’t help thinking that the fact it was teachings shared through different churches maybe meant that this wasn’t a cult but then of course they didn’t “let me down” with the cult behavior. I mean come on child labor camps for “bad” kids is straight out of Scientology’s manual.
And of course, my biggest thought is “Are there any more docs about this group?”. I’m definitely going to keep my eyes open so I can learn even more about the IBLP.
