Before I get started, I do want to say that I’ve only watched a few episodes of the One Piece anime, so most of this review will be from that point of view. But I did watch the entire show with my friend, who knows way more about One Piece, so I will include a little blurb from her at the end.
I truly loved this show. I know we fans of anime/cartoons have been screwed left and right by live-action adaptations, but I do believe we have a good one here. Everything from the special effects to the fight choreography and even the settings was amazing. Funny enough, my friend and I kept freaking out(in a good way) every time Luffy and his friends were in a new outfit! We were expecting the classic anime choice of having the characters in only one outfit, so we were super excited to see new clothes. But that excitement was quickly beaten out by my complete astonishment at how perfect the casting and acting were. Every actor and actress felt like they were made to play that role; I was particularly impressed with Buggy.
From the little that I do know about the anime, the two most essential parts of the show are following your dreams and Luffy’s lovable idiocy, which the live-action excelled at showing. It also helped that throughout the binge, my friend was keeping me informed of what actually happened. And she said(paraphrasing here) that the live-action One Piece was a satisfactory adaptation and that anything that was changed/removed/glossed over made sense for the length of the show. We both also agreed that it is always a bonus when you hear that the original creator was all up in the show’s business. Basically, this was a great adaptation and I am really hopeful that it gets more seasons. Oh, and I of course give it a 9 out of 10.
