Live-Action ATLA Season 1 Review

I was soooo happy with how this show came out. For so long, I was stressing about how it was going to turn out because I really wanted to like it and was afraid the naysayers would turn out to be right. And because of all the shit I was seeing on Twitter, that stress notched up to 100 in the 2 days from when it came out to when I was able to watch it. So, I was over the moon when I ended up loving it.

I don’t even know where to start, so I will start with the simplest. The bending was phenomenal! It looked so great, and the fight scenes were incredible. Another thing that looked great was the animals!!! Appa, Momo, and don’t forget the shirshu(don’t ask me why, but from the first time I saw the cartoon, I loved the shirsu). They all looked fantastic, without a drop of creepy/uncanny valley like a certain movie. I was also impressed with how they decided to combine episodes. I knew going in that a lot of the detours were going to be cut/changed, so I was curious how they were going to make everything work, which I think ended up working really well.

Now, despite how much I was happy with this show, I do have to mention a few issues. The first is that Aang did 0 waterbending in the show. While I was annoyed by that, it’s a non-issue really, since I’m assuming we’ll see Katara teaching Aang next season while they try to find Toph. The biggest issue was that it was a lot squeezed into a little. I think it works fine for people who have watched the cartoon already since they know the characters and have attachments to them. But for the unawares, there wasn’t a bunch of time to get to know side characters and thus not a lot of time to care about their outcomes. I think that issue probably would have been fixed if the season had at least 10 episodes, but I understand they did the best with what they were allotted(I’m assuming). This issue is also something that could be fixed if everyone shows Netflix that this show is worth putting more episodes and such into this series.

All of this is to say I really really really hope it gets at least all 3 seasons(and maybe even more) and that it gets a 9 out of 10 from me.
