Before I get to my opinions on the movie I want to get some facts straight for those who are confused about this movie. First, the cannibalism in the movie is supernatural(think vampire/zombie) cannibalism and not serial killer cannibalism. Which still isn’t good obviously but it is better than the latter. Also, it’s definitely a romance/coming-of-age story, any horror aspects are mainly due to the gore. Which wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be but it was still pretty bad.
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to the actual review, which will spoil the ending (sorry). I was actually really enjoying the movie up to a certain part. Even the semi-confusing nightmare/flashback combo dreams didn’t bother me that much because the story was unique and the actors were great. Taylor Russell was great and I absolutely loved Timothée Chalamet as Lee. I got so invested in Maren learning about her mom and her budding relationship with Lee that I almost forgot it was about cannibals. I also loved Lee who very quickly became my favorite thing about the movie. But then came the ending. I know it’s kind of stupid but I’m a huge sucker for “happy” endings or at least endings where both of the main characters are alive! Lee and Maren’s lives were going to be hard enough being eaters you could at least let them be happy together! If the ending was different this movie could have been a much higher rating for me but because they had to go and kill Lee it made me very upset so I have to give it a 6 out of 10. If Lee lived I would probably give it an 8 out of 10 but sadly I can only dream. Or at the very least I can create a headcanon where they both get to live happily ever after.
