This won’t be a classic review because I really just want to talk about this movie. A few days ago a friend and I were trying to find something to watch and we both admitted that we actually really liked Astro Boy. For 2 girls in their late 20s, Astro Boy is definitely not the type of movie you’d expect us to watch. Now, you might be wondering what is it we liked about this movie and I think the thing that we both agreed on the most was that its animation was really good for its time. I would even say that its animation has even held up to this day.
But while we both liked the movie one of my favorite parts about rewatching old cartoon movies with a friend is pointing out the silly details that kids’ movies have. Like how we both couldn’t stop picturing Dr. Tenma as Nick Cage, luckily that wasn’t a problem when we were kids. Or the fact that Astro is never going to be able to change his shoes because, for some unknown reason, Dr. Tenma decided to make him with permanent boots. Also, our confusion at why all the kids on the surface world had normal proportions but Astro was super thick. And don’t even get me started on the fact that the President was so obsessed with having a super military even though they aren’t even at war?! Now, don’t misunderstand me these details don’t make the movie bad, they instead add onto the nostalgic fun of watching an old cartoon by allowing you to point them out with friends.
