James Blade’s Instincts (The James Blade Series Book 1) Review

I’m going to start this off by saying that I got this book in a Goodreads giveaway, so I feel kind of bad for what I’m going to say. With that out of the way, I unfortunately did not like this book. All of my issues with this book can be boiled down to the fact that it felt like a middle school book trying to be a YA book. I don’t know if I missed something or got confused because when I started this book, I assumed it was at least a YA, so the vibe I got from the book was very confusing. You know the joke about two kids in a trench coat pretending to be an adult? Well, this was the book version of that. It felt like it was trying so hard to wax poetically and be deep and mature, but instead it just felt like a kid saying things they think an adult would say.

Along with all that, I honestly felt like some of the stuff that was being said didn’t match up with what was happening. Don’t even get me started on James having an internal monologue all about what family is when he just met these people 24 hours ago! Or another character calling him selfish when, from my point of view, literally not a single thing he’s done so far could be considered selfish! It was, frankly, a book that I had to slog through, and was really only semi-redeemed by the ending. Considering everything, I would give this book a 5.5 out of 10.

Honestly, I disagree. I thought this book was paced very well and served as a great introduction into the world of these characters. Maybe you missed the point of what was trying to be said or misunderstood the symbolism? James is definitely supposed to be an unreliable narrator. I respect your opinions, but I feel like if you read the rest of the series you would appreciate the overall tone and what this initial story started.
